Vocabulary lists for ESL and EFL classes
For English learners, a vocabulary list usually pairs a target word with a short gloss or a simple synonym. Enter each pair on its own line with the term first and the definition after a tab, a comma, or a dash with a space either side. Eight to sixteen pairs per set works well: enough to be a real lesson, small enough to revise in one sitting. Short glosses print better on flashcards than full dictionary definitions, and they are easier for learners to scan. If your definitions run long, trim them before printing rather than relying on tiny type.
Subject vocabulary beyond English class
The same list shape works for science terms, historical events, geography features, math vocabulary, or any other unit where students must know what a term means. Teachers often keep one list per unit so revision sets stay focused. When the definition is a proper noun, a date, or a short phrase, the matching format handles it cleanly because students draw lines between terms and definitions instead of writing them out.
When a matching sheet beats flashcards
Flashcards are for study: students see a term, recall the meaning, and check themselves. A matching sheet is for checking: terms in one column, definitions shuffled in another, and the student draws a line from each term to its meaning. If a student can complete a matching sheet unaided, they probably know the set; if they stall, they know which pairs to restudy. Matching also works when definitions are too long to write from memory, since the student only draws a line, never writes the definition out.
Keeping definitions short enough to print
Definitions share a page with the term and the answer blanks, so space is the constraint. Aim for ten words or fewer per definition. A one-line gloss such as 'very large' or 'the study of living things' prints cleanly and reads quickly. Long definitions get truncated to fit the card or column, which can hide meaning, so shorten them in your list instead. Cut filler words, keep the head noun, and drop examples unless the example is the definition, as with proper nouns.
Questions teachers ask
How should I separate the term from the definition?
Put the term first, then a tab, a comma, a spaced dash ( - ) or a spaced equals sign ( = ), then the definition, one pair per line. A dash with no spaces round it is read as part of the word, so 'photosynthesis-the process' stays one term. The parser keeps the first part as the term and the rest as the definition.
Which format should I use for a vocabulary test?
A matching sheet works well as a quick check, because students only draw a line from each term to its meaning. For a stronger test, use the missing-vowels or scramble format so students must produce the word itself.
How many vocabulary pairs fit on one page?
Flashcard pages hold eight cards, so a sixteen-pair list prints on two pages. Practice sheets hold sixteen rows, so a set of sixteen pairs fits on a single practice sheet.
Can I include an answer key?
